The North Eleuthera International Airport, spanning 44,000 sqft of Gross Floor Area (GFA), is designed to cater to a Peak Hour Passenger (PHP) capacity of 175, with a single terminal that can accommodate up to 400 people in the departures hall during peak times. This project embodies an elegant balance of form and function, creating a dynamic gateway to the Bahamas.

The airport's structural framework is a testament to the power of precision engineering and thoughtful design. Utilizing prefabricated concrete porticos set on a 20 x 20-foot grid, the structure is both robust and adaptable. The porticos, each measuring 40 feet in height, are constructed using high-strength, corrosion-resistant concrete, specifically formulated to withstand the saline environment of Nassau. This concrete mix includes a blend of silica fume and fly ash, enhancing its durability and sustainability.

The section design of the terminal minimizes construction detailing while enriching the spatial experience. By playing with the section, we have created varied ceiling heights and introduced clerestory windows that bathe the interior in natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating an ever-changing play of shadows. This not only breaks the volumetric uniformity but also elevates the passenger experience.

The facade of the terminal is a dance of light and shadow, achieved through a sequence of alternating high-density prefabricated panels and large glazed openings. The panels, each 5 cm thick, are made from an innovative composite material that combines lightweight aggregate with recycled content, providing both thermal insulation and structural integrity. These panels are interspersed with high-performance glazing, utilizing low-E glass with a solar control coating, reducing heat gain while maximizing natural light.

The flooring throughout the terminal is a seamless expanse of polished terrazzo, a material chosen for its durability, ease of maintenance, and timeless aesthetic. The terrazzo incorporates locally sourced aggregates, reflecting the natural beauty of the Bahamian landscape.

The airport operates as a finely tuned machine, with the arrivals and departures functions seamlessly integrated yet distinctly separate. The foundation of the terminal is a deep pile system, designed to anchor the structure securely in the island's sandy soil while providing stability against potential storm surges. Above, the roof is a tensile structure with a double-layer membrane, providing both insulation and a striking visual profile. The membrane is coated with a reflective material, reducing solar heat gain and contributing to the building's overall energy efficiency.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design. The terminal incorporates a range of green technologies, including a rainwater harvesting system that supplies non-potable water for landscape irrigation and greywater systems. Photovoltaic panels are integrated into the roof structure, generating a significant portion of the airport's energy needs. Additionally, the building management system optimizes energy use by adjusting lighting and HVAC operations based on real-time occupancy and weather conditions.

In essence, the North Eleuthera International Airport is more than a transport hub; it is a celebration of innovative design, sustainability, and the seamless integration of technology and nature. This project not only meets the practical needs of its users but also stands as a beacon of architectural excellence in the Bahamas.
